Equipment List

Gear I didn't take but wish I had.

  • Long trousers - OK I had a pair of Columbia convertible pants, but the leg zips gave out on day 1 and from then on they were shorts. The only good thing about them was that they dried out very quickly. I should have taken my army wool trousers.
  • Long sleeve shirt - apart from my rain jacket and thermal top I only had short sleeve tops and for scrub bashing as well as sun protection long sleeves would have been good.
  • Sandals (thongs or flip flops) - it's a nuisance putting on boots in camp.
  • Hydration system - I had a drink bottle in a side pocket on my pack, but getting it back in without taking off my pack was tricky.

Gear I took but didn't need.
  • Pack rain cover - the pack is fairly water resistant and I double bag my gear anyway so it was completely unnecessary. I paid $40 for it so I took it but it just took up space.
  • Life Straw - we were told water near the end of the South Coast track is less plentiful so I took it just in case and it doesn't take up much room or weight.
